The rupee closed at Rs42.500/505 against dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market in Mumbai on January 22, 1999. The rupee opened at 42.510/515 against the previous day's close of 42.510. It touched a high of Rs42.520/525 at one point. The market was quite active with a fair amount of trade. But State Bank of India did not participate actively in the market. (um)(psr)

Bajaj Auto Ltd posted a 12 percent increase in its 2- wheeler sales at 601,860 in the first half of 1998-99 (526,900 units in the same period of 1997-98). Its scooter sales increased by 12 percent to 4.05 lakh (3.63 lakh). Its motorcycle sales increased by 41 percent to 83,060. (rk)
