CHILE: CHEVRITA'S CHEESE PRODUCTION
Article Abstract:
Lescure Bougon, the French dairy cooperative, opened a production unit fifty kilometres from Santiago, Chile, in 1994 - two years after it had made its first contacts with the Fondacion Chile. This unit has 1,200 goats, and produces 260 tonnes of goat's milk and cow's milk cheese a year under the Chevrita SA brand. It is not expected to break even until 2001. Chevrita also exports 15% of its products to Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. In Chile, goat cheese consumption is not common, because in this country, goat cheese means a health risk and because this cheese is expensive. Chevrita is organising tasting operations in order to acquaint people with these products. The company is also organising an open house in order to encourage stock breeders to produce goat's milk.

PORTUGAL: THE DAIRY PRODUCT MARKET
Article Abstract:
Portugal averages only 8 kilos of dairy products per capita per year, compared with 18 kilos in Spain and 33 kilos in France, so the dairy product market has considerable potential. This market is booming with a 26% rise in sales volume in 1999, and a 40% growth in 2000. Danone is the principal brand on the market, with a 34% value market share, followed by 25% for Nestle, and 12% for Yoplait. Danone is orienting its advertising on the health aspect of dairy products, in order to stimulate the market and strengthen its position. It has created a yogurt information centre in partnership with a nutritionist. Danone is the first brand on the market to advertise on television.
