Calatrava wins London Underground competition for modular station building
Article Abstract:
Santiago Calatrava has won a competition for design of stations for London Underground Ltd (LUL). The contest was intended to achieve a modular station which could be used to replace all LUL's surface level station buildings. The station components are regarded as products employing good, simple design pirnciples. Calatrava's design is based on four structural elements. A steel rib roof will be supported by steel columns. Station rooms will be centrally positioned within a metal frame. The basic components can be assembled in a weekend and prototypes are to be constructed in Apr 1993.
