Call waiting: German telecoms

Start-up telecom companies have been grabbing parts of Deutsche Telekom's business before the planned deregulation of the German market. Firms such as Telepassport route calls through other countries to undercut Telekom on rates. They are competing with service and marketing to Telekom's massive infrastructure.

ATT's voice recognition computers are replacing up to a third of the long-distance telephone company's 18,000 human operators. The computers not only listen, they also respond and route customers who carefully use five simple phrases. Voice recognition technology is also discussed.
