Calls for liberty that condemned Wei Jinsheng to China's bamboo gulag shine at his release to U.S

Chinese political detainee Wei Jingsheng was finally released by the Chinese government in Nov 16, 1997 following 18 years of imprisonment in China's bamboo gulag, for writing articles on the political situation in China and the global need for democracy. Wei's imprisonment failed to quell his beliefs. One of his most famous articles, "The Fifth Modernization-Democracy," talks about true democracy as being the people's right to select their own representatives.

Global commerce may play an important part in getting China to reform some of its political practices. Karl Marx is correct that capitalism remains influential in making economies adapt to the bourgeois mode of production as in the case of China. The most-favored-nation trade policy of the US towards China may help facilitate in making China open up to international trade.
