Surat's travails exemplify the woes of Thai companies

Surat Canning PCL, one of Thailand's most noted fish packaging company, was removed from the listings of the Security Exchange of Thailand, after the company incurred insurmountable debts. Surat's financial difficulties started in early 1990s, when it reported a total annual loss of 9.39 million baht and was charged by SET of disclosing inaccurate financial information. The company's troubles were further compounded during the third quarter of 1997, when its total debt amounted to 539.4 million baht.

Business stirs debate over Internet suffixes

Joel Disini, president of DotPH Inc., a Manila Internet company, is stirring up concern among Philippine Internet groups because of his plan to commercialize the .ph suffix (the Philippines' primary Internet domain) on a global scale as a phone domain. DotPH is the sole registrar of .ph domain names, under such suffixes as .com.ph, .net.ph, and .org.ph. He wants to allow individuals or companies to set up addresses ending in .ph. The controversy is discussed.

Discount ticket seller H.I.S. has plans to begin passenger flights in Japan

H.I.S. Co. plans to launch its own domestic flight operations in Japan by 1998. The discount airline ticket seller intends to begin its flight operations with three leased medium-sized planes. The company has already sought the assistance of All Nippon Airways in operating and managing the domestic flight service. If H.I.S. gains approval, it will become the first company to start domestic flight services in Japan in more than four decades.
