Can Obasanjo save Nigeria
Article Abstract:
Olusegun Obasanjo has been elected president in Nigeria, and faces a number of challenges such as a drop in per capita income, and in petroleum prices. He has to tackle corruption, reduce the weight of petroleum in the economy, and develop a federal system that is more democratic. There is a risk that corruption could become a problem so serious that the state withers away, as occurred in Zaire. Corruption affects a number of aspects of life in Nigeria, such as schools, which do not receive allocated funds, and factories which have to shut down due to power cuts.
