Canada rejects mergers of big banks

The proposed mergers between the Bank of Montreal and the Royal Bank of Canada and between Toronto-Dominion Bank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce have been blocked by government regulators who fear market dominance and economic concentration in the Canadian banking industry. Industry analysts have said that government regulators will conduct an extensive review of Canada's financial services industry.

PBK-BPH merger will create Poland's third-largest bank

Bank Przemyslowo-Handlowy SA (BPH) has reached a deal to merge its operations with Powszechny Bank Kredytowy (PBK) before the end of 2001. The deal will create the third-largest bank in Poland.
