Cap Gemini's system for conquering the world
Article Abstract:
Unlike most French firms, Cap Gemini Sogeti S.A. (a software developer and marketer that began operations in 1967) has developed an American style of management that focuses on profits, marketing, strategic planning, financial control and decentralization, all of which are principles considered distasteful in the French business world. Cap Gemini is currently the largest software house in Europe, with subsidiary companies in the U.S. and eight European nations. A brief biography of Serge Kampf, founder of Cap Gemini, is followed by analysis of the custom-software company's startling growth patterns and success. For the most recent year of operations, Cap Gemini posted profits of $19 million on sales of $315 million, with 56 percent of its earnings generated in foreign markets. In the U.S., where 1,700 people are employed by the firm, Cap Gemini expects turnover of between $125 and $150 million for the upcoming year.

Exporting Tandem's Californiaesque corporate culture
Article Abstract:
Fail-safe computer systems world leader Tandem Computers used a people-oriented management style to surpass a period of financial difficulty in the early 1980s, as well as to cultivate employe loyalty in Europe and globally. Tandem's Dutch VP for European operations Robert Hoogstraten also attributes Tandem's success to its ability to attract employees with a creative bent. Staff turnover is below the 20 percent industry average: 11.2 percent in Europe in 1986, and 11.9 percent worldwide. Worldwide Tandem revenues grew 23 percent to $737 million in 1986.

Still following the leader
Article Abstract:
European computer manufacturers seem ready to be increasingly competitive against US rivals such as Unisys, DEC, and IBM. The European firms are returning to profitability, and their revenues from sources beyond home markets are increasing. The US lead in computers and other technologies has until now been perpetuated by the size of the US market, government contracts, and venture capital financing. It is suggested that European progress in each of these three areas will help European manufacturers to make progress in developing their market base.
