The 400-acre Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa (Palm Springs, CA) is known for its futuristic architecture and advanced technology. General mgr John Ceriale reports that the Spa relied on a continual program of direct mail to develop a clientele while the resort was under construction. In addition to an upscale health club, the spa features 51,300 square feet of meeting space that allows for sophisticated audio-visual equipment, teleconferencing, and computer hook-ups. Marriott sales in 1986 were $191.7 million, with growth increasing at over 20 percent for the seventh consecutive year.

Handwritten customer profile cards are maintained for guests, so that special touches such as room decor may be adjusted to suit repeat visitors. Room rates at the Pierre begin at $240 per night for a single, not including tax or breakfast. Four Seasons is a publicly held firm that owns or operates 23 hotels in the US, Canada, and in London, England.

A 1929 temple of taste

The Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France is a 400-room facility that was restored to its 1929 grandeur at an investment of 25 million francs. The hotel is closed for a month from mid-November to mid-December and for all of February, but its average occupancy was 56% for 1987. Rates are raised by 50% during the famous Cannes film festival. The Martinez is flagship of a group of 43 hotels run by the Societe Concorde.
