Capital punishment
Article Abstract:
Insurers face competition which has led to a drop in premiums, while drops in interest rates, stagnant growth, excess capital and excess capacity have also created problems. Accounting practices such as releasing claims reserves have disguised the extent of the problem for the US non-life industry, which could otherwise have reported a loss for 1997. The bull market in stocks has helped insurers. There are a number of market-related factors that insurers cannot control, but they are able to reduce their capital.
