European automakers are decreasing production because cars are not selling well. Sales reached 12.25 million for Jan-Nov 1998, an increase of 6% over Jan-Nov 1997, but the rate of growth has decreased. Volvo plans to restructure its business operations which could result in layoffs. Price wars are expected in 1999.

Volvo trembling on brink of matrimony
Article Abstract:
There are rumors circulating the US automaker, Ford Motor Co., is ready to acquire Swedish automaker, Volvo. Ford has acquired Jaguar and Aston Martin and strengthened both brands. Ford would do well to associate itself with an auto manufacturer, such as Volvo, which is known for its safety and quality.

Another boss in Opel's hot seat

American Robert Hendry was appointed Adam Opel AG chairman in Nov 1998 after a successful tenure as Saab Automobile AB CEO for two years. Saab is beginning to turn a profit and Hendry must provide the same direction for Opel. Hendry has worked in Europe since the mid-1980s from time to time.
