Canongate pitches the Bible as hip new novel

Canongate Books Ltd., a publisher based in Edinburgh, Scotland, will introduce in autumn 1998 its Pocket Canons, which are composed of the Bible's 12 books that are treated as literary works with historical significance. The covers of Pocket Canons, which comprise six books from the Old Testament and six books from the New Testament, were designed by Angus Hyland, who is a partner in Pentagram Design in London, UK. The covers of the paperbacks will all feature black-and-white, moody photographs and introductions written by renowned writers that include Doris Lessing for "Ecclesiastes," Will Self for "Revelation" and A.S. Byatt for "The Song of Solomon."

Time Warner book unit may merge

Time Warner Inc.'s book division is engaged in merger negotiations with Viacom Inc.'s Simon & Schuster publishing unit. The talks involve the potential merger of several of the two division's back-office and marketing operations. Such a deal is intended to give the divisions an amount of leverage within the rapidly-consolidating book industry. According to people close to the talks, the negotiations are far from being completed.
