Cash and carry: Thai financier sets trend by buying bank stake
Article Abstract:
Thai financier Pin Chakkaphak may be starting a trend of buying stakes in small and medium-sized Thai banks that can benefit from such deals as they face increased competition from international banks. Pin's company, Finance One bought 20% of the Thai Danu Bank. The bank benefits by increasing its capital and the finance company benefits by being able to market through the bank. The Thai central bank may allow finance companies and banks to own larger stakes of one another in order to encourage such partnerships as Thailand has opened itself to international banks.

Spread the wealth: Thailand issues blueprint for financial liberalization
Article Abstract:
Thailand's cabinet approved on Feb 28, 1995, a blueprint for opening its financial system, decentralizing banking services, and building Bangkok's claim to be an international financial center. The plan will permit more licenses for both domestic and international banks and open new lines of work to finance and securities companies. The five-year plan will increase competition and may cut profits, but Thai banks are currently in a strong position.

Lower expectations
Article Abstract:
Efforts by the central bank to prevent a free fall of Thailand's economy by pushing up interest rates and employing tight money policies appear to be working. Even if the economy has reached its bottom, it will move upward slowly and not likely resume the 8% growth it had during the last 10 years. To decrease their deficit, Thailand will need to revive its export trade, lost to competitiveness in the labor-intensive manufacturing industries.
