Casino capitalism
Article Abstract:
A number of new casinos and hotels are planned for Las Vegas, including the Mirage Group's $1.8 billion Bellagio. Over 20,000 new rooms are planned in the two and a half years from Oct 1998, in addition to the existing 106,000 rooms. Room occupancy rates have already dropped and room prices are being reduced. The Asian economic crisis has hit Las Vegas, and US gamblers could also be hit by a financial downturn. Decisions to build were taken at a time of easy credit during the mid-1990s.
