Philips draws fire for new CD recorder
Article Abstract:
Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands is being criticized for producing compact disk recording devices called CD-R that can lead to piracy of recording content by home users. The company has tried to defend itself from the arguments of the global recording industry by citing the existence of security systems and the use of discussion forums to prevent piracy from being done. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry charged the firm with ignoring a 1989 agreement that requires record industry executives and equipment manufacturers to present any new technologies for scrutiny to prevent extensive piracy.

Lyondell to stall building of plant in Netherlands
Article Abstract:
Lyondell Chemical Co. will postpone the construction of a propylene-oxide plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands, after its recent purchase of Arco Chemical Co. The company has delayed the scheduled start-up of the plant from late 2000 to late 2002 or early 2003. According to the company, the decision was made partly because of its capital plan, a drop in industrywide demand for styrene monomer and other products and the Asian economic crisis. Meanwhile, the company is considering moving the location of the proposed Rotterdam facility.
