Casteing stones: India
Article Abstract:
Caste politics in India has been the cause of riots in the country. One case involved the uprising of the 'dalit' caste due to the desecration of a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a champion of the dalits. Indian politicians routinely court specific castes to support their political campaigns rather than rallying people around a national cause. Such appeals to caste sensitivities result in riots that follow once the caste's demands are not met. A number of Indian politicians are calling for a halt to this kind of political campaign, which causes more divisions within India's population.
