Cautious cooperation
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's environmental groups have in recent years begun to cooperate more with the government and attack it less, thanks, they say, to a new awareness on the government's part of the economic costs of deforestation and pollution. Former environmental minister Emil Salim also sought close links to the non-governmental organizations, as does the present forestry minister, Djamaloedin Soeryohadikoesoemo. The government also realized it alone could not protect the country's vast resources. However, confrontation on some issues continues.

Reality check
Article Abstract:
Many Asian students studying abroad are facing financial difficulties as a result of the region's economic crisis. In some cases, families are having to ask sons or daughters studying abroad to return home. Numbers of returning students could rise when the new academic year begins in Sep 1998, particularly among students dependent on government scholarships. This trend could have serious long-term economic repercussions for Asian countries.
