Chavez's blank cheque
Article Abstract:
Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, has backed candidates which have 121 seats in Venezuela's constituent assembly, of a total of 131 seats. This allows Chavez to carry out reform, though there are also concerns that an elected dicatorship could be set up. There is a lack of consistency in Chavez' attitude toward business, and he has done little to tackle the country's recession. Venezuela has been hit by poverty and political corruption, and there is a need for change, but changes should involve reform of the state, and power should not be concentrated in the hands of Chavez.

Between the caudillo and the democrat
Article Abstract:
Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, aims to rewrite the constitution and restructure the judicial and political system, and this has aroused opposition from the Supreme Court and Congress. There is a risk that democracy could be undermined in Venezuela. Chavez has threatened a state of emergency if he is not granted more power by Congress. The political opposition is disorganized. Chavez aims to be able to extend his term of office by removing a prohibition on presidents serving for two consecutive terms.
