Cheaper by the dozen: Matahari stores transform Indonesia's retails sector
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's Matahari retail chain plans ambitious growth as part of a strategy to cut costs and reap economies of scale while reaching consumers nationally. It will open 12 new outlets and renovate its 60 existing ones this year, at a cost of $75 million, off $356 million in sales in 1994 and a planned $47 million rights issue. Originally the company grew too quickly in a limited area, but current expansion plans are more efficient. Competitive strategies of Matahari and other retailers are explored.
