Big names from the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector were involved in M&A activity in 1999, including AstraZeneca, Novartis and Monsanto. Consolidation in the sector is not yet completed and it is expected to end up with a few key players, each having a market share of between 15% and 20%.

Third time lucky for Bank of Scotland?

The Bank of Scotland is hoping that the proposed merger with the Halifax will be successful. The resultant bank will be the fifth largest in the UK. Issues concerning the location of the headquarters and the management structure are still to be finalised.
