Chemists' goods in The Netherlands
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the 1995 chemist' goods sector in The Netherlands reveals that turnover in the pharmaceuticals industry increased by 5.8% to 3.8 billion Dutch guilders. The rise in the volume of pharmaceuticals consumption is estimated at 1.3%. Competition between the more expensive branded medicines and cheaper generic products is strengthening. Output in the soap and detergent industry increased by nearly 3%, and the cosmetics and toiletries market grew by 2.8%, which was slightly down on the previous year's figures. Annual spending on cosmetics and toiletries per person was 205 guilders.

In 1997, Spain, the UK, and the Netherlands all reported a 3% increase in consumer spending, with growth of less than 1% reported by Germany and France. Spending growth is forecast to continue, with the UK and Spain both expected to report 3% growth for 1998. An overview of consumer spending trends by country is given, including details of consumer spending on domestic appliances, audio visual equipment, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, toiletries and cleaning products.
