Chemopetrol invests in environmental protection
Article Abstract:
Chemopetrol (Litvinov, Czech Republic), petrochemical company, has invested nearly 9.9 bil Kc in environmental protection since 1989. The company has lowered the total emissions of sulphur dioxide, dust nad nitrogen oxides by 91%, solid emissions having fallen by more than 98%. It produced 8,000 t of sulphur dioxide in 1998 compared to 85,000 t in 1989. In the same period, the company decreased the quantity of waste by more than 55%. It also did a pilot experiment at its heating plant equipped with a very efficient system for the purification of combustion products. The experiment lied in the disposal of industial and civil sediments from biological sewage treatment plants, which cannot be used in agriculture, by combustion together with coal. The project was supported by finance and technical aid from the German ministry of the environment. Chemopetrol has also made a study on the permanent utilisation of this method.

Chemopetrol shields a distillery project
Article Abstract:
Chemopetrol (Litvinov, Czech Republic), petrochemical company, co-operates in a project on the production of fermenting alcohol, bio-ethanol. The construction of the distillery could be started by the end of 1999 and bio-ethanol production could begin in 2002. Bio-ethanol should totally substitute synthetic methanol Ceska rafinerska (Litvinov, Czech Republic) has been using for petrol production. Sugar-beet, potatoes and grain for the bio- ethanol production should be grown on an area of 55,000 ha, which could revive Czech agricultural production markedly. Another firm involved in the project is Celio (Litvinov, Czech Republic), which is engaged in environment-friendly waste disposal and works land in Chemopetrol's neighbourhood. Celio would take part in the transport of the industrial plants to the distillery. However, profitable production of fermenting-alcohol petrols requires a change in the Czech tax system.
