Article Abstract:
Eastern Europe's nuclear power plants have the potential for disaster, as they were designed like the one at Chernobyl in Russia. Bringing up to acceptable safety standards is not feasible. The best thing would be to convert them to gas-fired power stations.

Dirty stories: East European pollution
Article Abstract:
Environmental damage and pollution in Eastern Europe might not be as bad as originally feared. Cleaning up the region should not require vast amounts of spending. More sensible policies on conservation and pollution control should help the region recover.

Article Abstract:
Most of the nuclear reactors built by the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe are unsafe and seriously in need of overhauling. Several should be shut down outright. Western countries can and should help to avoid another Chernobyl.
