China and U.S. show hope in latest piracy talks
Article Abstract:
The latest round of negotiations between the US and China over Chinese violation of American intellectual property rights appears to be more optimistic than earlier piracy talks. Beijing has intensified its efforts to crackdown on pirates as demanded by Washington, and is expected to go after local compact disc makers who violate copyright laws. If China does not comply with US demands by June 17, 1996, the Clinton government plans to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese imports valued at as much as $2 billion.

Dole sends mixed message to China by backing MFN, regional defense plan
Article Abstract:
Sen. Bob Dole has expressed support for the extension of most-favored-nation (MFN) status for China. Dole justified his position by saying that denying China MFN status would not only set back US-Sino relations but would signal a US withdrawal from the Pacific Rim as well. In the same speech, however, Dole called for a joint effort between the US, Japan and South Korea for the development of a high-tech missile defense system.
