Prison ropes in tourists
Article Abstract:
The Pudu Prison in Kuala Lumpur, a landmark built by the British colonial government in 1891, offers visitors a glimpse of the penitentiary's past. Malaysia's version of Alcatraz, the infamous US prison that has become a popular tourist attraction in San Francisco, CA. veers away from its US counterpart's concept of a prison tour. Unlike Alcatraz, which offers a simple guided tour, Pudu Prison exudes a carnival atmosphere. Its gallows are illuminated with flashing disco lights during an audio re-enactment of a hanging and video presenters cheerfully describe brutal canings.

Portraits bear silent witness to the killing fields
Article Abstract:
'The Killing Fields' tells the story behind the Tuol Sleng penitentiary in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The book, a Robert Capa photography winner, contains 100 photographs from salvaged negatives found in the prison by American photographers Chris Riley and Doug Niven. The book also includes a prisoner's narrative and a text by David Chandler, a Cambodia historian. Riley and Diven found 7,000 prints and negatives in 1993. They founded the Photo Archive Group, and spent three years restoring their find.
