China cuts fuel tariffs, raises steel export tax

China's Ministry of Finance has raised export tariffs on coke and semicoke from 15% to 25% effective on Jan. 1, 2008. The move aims to discourage coke exports, a material used in making steel but also known as a major polluter. The government also plans to raise tariffs on steel billet exports from 15% to 25%.

EU tariffs sought on Chinese steel imports

The European Union will consider implementing tariffs on steel imports from China, prompted by Europe's steel producers and concerns over Europe's trade deficit with China, which has climbed to $86 bil in the first half of 2007. If approved, the tariffs would be applied in about 10 months.
