China is seen stepping up its efforts to isolate foes in Hong Kong, Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Political analysts believe China is taking steps to isolate and neutralize its opponents in Hong Kong and Taiwan, in anticipation of its eventual unification with both states. Chinese officials have already launched a campaign against Hong Kong Gov. Chris Patten for instituting democratic reforms in the British colony. They have also expressed their indignation over Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui's attempts to win international recognition for his country. China has long declared that with the return of Hong Kong in 1997, its reunification with the splinter state of Taiwan will be inevitable.

China hardens posture on Taiwan before summit by mentioning war
Article Abstract:
Chinese government and military officials have been dropping hints that they are not ruling out military force to retake Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province. Observers believe that these hints are part of China's posturing prior to Pres. Jiang Zemin's meeting with Bill Clinton, to indicate that China will oppose efforts to give international recognition to Taiwan. Jiang and Clinton will try to smooth relations strained by Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-Hui's US visit in June 1995.

China watchers see renewed effort by Beijing to play up Taiwan issue
Article Abstract:
Observers have noted the Chinese government's renewed emphasis on the Taiwan issue. Chinese media has played up a recent speech delivered by Pres. Jiang Zemin, in which he lauded the steady improvement of relations with Taiwan while stressing opposition to the island's independence. Some analysts interpret this focus on Taiwan as an attempt to generate nationalist fervor as Deng Xiapoing's health deteriorates and the country's economy slows down.
