China's lax effort to fight piracy fans U.S. tensions
Article Abstract:
Observers predict that trade tensions between the US and China will heighten further following the recent visit of a US trade delegation. A report has not yet been issued but sources reveal that the US delegation found evidence of continued Chinese indifference to the copyright protection problem. The Chinese government has also failed to comply with previous agreements to open up markets to foreign companies. The Clinton administration has reportedly drawn up more than $1 billion in sanctions against China.

U.S. bears the brunt of China's anger for shipped waste labeled as recyclable
Article Abstract:
The Chinese media has helped to fan public anger over foreign garbage being dumped by unscrupulous operators on the mainland. The garbage comes from several countries but much of the anger is focused on the US because it is widely regarded as the leading source of the wastes. The US government has officially disavowed responsibility for the wastes and it contends that it is up to the Chinese government to refuse entry to such imports. The issue could add to rising anti-US sentiments in China.

Commerce Secretary's trip to China produced more hype than business, U.S. executives say
Article Abstract:
Executives have criticized Commerce Secretary Ron Brown's business mission to China in Aug. 1994 for its lack of results. The visit included the signing of over $6 billion in deals. However, less than 10% of these agreements have been fulfilled, while most of the deals were overvalued to meet Commerce Department objectives. The lack of results is also blamed on China's bureaucracy, which remains unaffected by official deals.
