Chongqing's bold ambitions: Beijing seeks foreign investment for region
Article Abstract:
The Chinese national legislature, in an effort to bring in more foreign investments to the country's inner regions, voted in Mar 1997 to turn Chongqing into a municipality and giving it the power to set its own economic agenda. Chongqing has since issued 61 new preferential policies aimed at luring foreign firms from China's coastal economic zones. The municipality has also invited investors on tours to its 10,000 factories, whose total products and services grew by 10.7% to $14.11 bil in 1996.

Li Peng maps out cautious state reform
Article Abstract:
Chinese Premier Li Peng announced a package of cautious economic reforms at the annual meeting of the National People's Congress. The economic reform package, which Li Peng said is predicated upon overcoming market limitations through macroeconomic management, will address the problem of unprofitable state-owned companies. The economic reforms package will reduce the number of government bureaucrats and Communist Party officials by as much as 50%.

Inflation rate slows down

China's credit status is expected to improve as a result of the recent drop in inflation rate. Statistics revealed that China's retail price index for the first eight months of 1997 increased by 1.4% compared to the previous year. According to analysts, the ongoing trend would be beneficial in enhancing the country's economic condition through reductions in lending rates and reserve requirements for banking institutions.
