Former Hyundai chief Chung Ju Yung, who may be preparing a bid for the South Korean presidency, caused quite a stir when he suggested the Communist Party be allowed to exist in South Korea. He has exposed himself to much criticism and scrutiny in the intensely anti-communist country.

Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju Yong is starting a political party that will not only challenge the ruling Democratic Liberal Party but will field candidates for the South Korean National Assembly. There is also speculation that Chung might run for president himself.

Roh Tae Woo, due to retire as South Korea's president, is somewhat out of favor at home but admired internationally for his diplomatic breakthroughs. He established relations with Russia and China, made overtures to North Korea and opened new export markets.
