Cities in crisis - is growth the answer? An analysis of the outcome of the first and second rounds of the 'Single Regeneration Budget Challenge Fund.'
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative government's Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) has marginalized projects which would benefit vulnerable groups, including ethnic minorities. The SRB, introduced in 1993, highlights the greater reliance placed on economic growth as a means of addressing urban decline, and the lower priority given to inequality as an issue. Approximately 10% of the SRB is available as the Challenge Fund. The Fund is open for competitive bidding across the country, with no targeting of the more needy areas. The outcomes of bidding for the Challenge Fund are presented.

The inner cities: towards a new agenda
Article Abstract:
It is suggested that urban policy should incorporate a more strategic perspective, taking local opinion into account, and following political debate. Inner urban policy has been in place for over 15 years, and despite some positive evaluations, the majority are critical. An overview of recent criticism is provided, including details of the problems surrounding the subject, and suggestions for a more effective policy.
