The effectiveness of the British land use planning system
Article Abstract:
The success of Britain's land use planning system in achieving its objectives is difficult to assess because of benefits that have been brought about unintentionally and the need to counterbalance successes with some significant failures. Central government defines the official aims of the British land use planning system, seeing the regulation of land use as the principal objective. While the British land use planning system has been reasonably effective in conserving scanty land resources, it has had some less desirable, though unintentional, effects.

Development control and the legitimacy of planning decisions
Article Abstract:
UK planners are increasingly operating in a theoretical vacuum in which they themselves are interpreting planning case law and guidance. Planners have an influential role in development control, since few planning proposals are actually subject to central guidance or guided by a local plan. Politicians have a less significant role, since much of the debate takes place before members are involved, and in most authorities few planning proposals come before members. Article further discusses planning decisions and responds to a paper by Mark Tewdwr-Jones.
