Mayhew's London: Judith Mayhew, head of the City Corporation, is promoting quality in building as part of the battle to attract business from other financial centres
Article Abstract:
Judith Mayhew is head of the City Corporation and also has a senor post at solicitor Wilde Sapte. The City Corporation takes in 400 million pounds sterling of rates each year, and controls the most value square mile in the world. She believes that the quality of buildings has been improved immeasurably with the move to pre-letting, as occupiers are involved early on and specify higher standards. This also strengthens the City's hand in gaining business, in the wake of competition not just from Docklands, but from rival financial centres.

Modern sheltered housing on a monumental scale
Article Abstract:
Mercers House is a block of 28 sheltered flats in Islington, London, England. Designed by John Melvin, it shows the influence of the monumental style of Lutyens but is popular with tenants. The concrete framed building is faced with decorative brickwork that emphasises its height and perpendicular features. Internally, the flats are arranged on three staircases with a top floor connection with the warden's flat.
