City frontages overcome set-back
Article Abstract:
Buildings in the City of London, England, may get permission to be built further forward in the street on building lines established before World War II. Buildings erected after 1950 had to be set back to allow for road widening and because taller buildings needed to be surrounded by greater space determined by daylight angles. However, in a case that may set a precedent, permission has been given for a new building at Bow Churchyard to be built 3m forward of the existing building line to occupy the line of pre-war buildings. The City planning officer agrees this can be done where appropriate.

Glass structure: private house
Article Abstract:
All-glass construction has been used to provide a conservatory for an historic house in London. The owners of an 18th century house in Hampstead wanted an extension on the north side but to conserve the house's historic facade planners insisted that aluminium glazing bars should not be used. Rick Mather Architects designed an all-glass conservatory. The 3.375m wide extension uses laminated glass columns and laminated glass beams slotted into steel angles. Roof and walls are made of two layers of toughened glass. The self-load of the glass is 0.5kN/m sqared, sufficient to withstand wind.

Brunswick plans on hold: alterations scheme under review
Article Abstract:
Plans to alter the Brunswick Centre, Camden, London, England, are to be reviewed following criticism. The proposals from architect Le Riche Maw were questioned by Patrick Hodgkinson, Architect's Journal and the Royal Fine Art Commission. Developers Tranmac are considering three options; abandoning the plans, trying to force the present plans through or trying to get permission in principle while reserving a number of matters. A report from the Royal Fine Art Commission is awaited.
