Classroom comrades
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom teachers' labor unions are increasing their membership, but this does not mean that teachers are becoming more militant. UK teachers tend to work longer hours than elsewhere among richer countries, but they are also better paid. The labor unions are focusing on working hours rather than increased spending on education and inspections, partly because the government is standing firm on the last two issues. Labor unions offer legal advice and representation, which attracts teachers since they are under more scrutiny over competence and conduct.
