Clean-up could cost $250m
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong government will begin accepting tenders bids for decontamination and demolition work at Kai Tak Airport at the end of June. The contract is expected to be worth HK$200-250 mn, with about HK$60 mn embarked for the decontamination project. Another contract for work in cleaning, draining and refilling the heavily polluted Kai Tak nullah will begin in 1999. The government expects the redevelopment of the entire site to take 10 years. People are expected to begin moving in before 2006. Kai Tak and the associated redevelopment will accommodate more than 300,000 people. *

The Government has proposed a massive tourism development project as part of its Southeast Kowloon Development. The tourism project consists of a Metropolitan Park with area of 50 ha. The park will have a city farm. It will also build an international stadium for concerts place, an aviation institute , a museum, a harbour-site promenade and a scenic vista in Tsim Sha Tsui. The whole project involves 113 ha including former Kai Tak Airport will due for completion in 2016. *

HKTA to spend $8m converting Tamar site
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong government has granted the 2.8 hectare former Tamar site to the Hong Kong Tourist Association under a tenancy good until 30 June 2000. The site will be converted into an open venue to promote tourism. The association expected to invest between HK$7 mn and HK$8 mn for improvement works which will start in September. The project is scheduled to start operation in October. *
