KCRC hopeful of raising $25b for West Rail
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong Government has approved the HK$64 bn West Rail project which links Kowloon and the northwest Territories. The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp will provide HK$10 bn, while the Government will provide HK$29 bn. The remaining HK$25 bn will be raised from open market. The whole project involves 9 stations and 360 hectares land. Private land resumption of 80 hectares costs HK$7.9 bn. About 14 contracts will be awarded in mid-1999. *

Plan to use German train still on track
Article Abstract:
Taiwan High Speed Rail Consortium, the builder of Taiwan's first high-speed rail, plans to use the German ICE locomotive and TGV cars unless it is proved that ICE locomotive caused the train catastrophe in Germany on 3 June 1998. The consortium won the US$15 bn contract to build the 345-km rail linking Taipei and Kaoshiung. Construction will start in July 1998 and finish in 2003. *
