Although many methods of birth control are available, most have drawbacks and many offer different advantages. Contraceptives which effect women's hormone levels, methods of changing men's fertility and research on using the immune system for contraception are compared.

Family planning for pachyderms: conservation

South Africa's Kruger National Park has proposed contraception as an alternative to killing to keep its elephant population within manageable limits. Female elephants will be given a vaccine that has been developed to prevent fertilization.

Controlling the African elephant population is become a problem again since the ban on ivory. Scientists are working to develop a contraceptive for them. RU-486, which terminates pregnancies, may be tested in Kenya in late 1993.
