Clouds over Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong has a number of advantages as a financial center, such as transparency, low costs, and efficiency, and it is undergoing reforms which should improve its attractions. Yet Hong Kong faces competition from New York and London in a number of areas, and there are also concerns about government intervention. Links with China can be beneficial but could also bring problems to Hong Kong if there is a major financial crisis in China. There is also local competition from centers such as Singapore.

Fixing the holes
Article Abstract:
The credit derivatives market appears to be performing well and an agreement has been issues by the International Swaps and Derivatives Association in a bid to standardize credit derivative contracts. There has been some slackening in the market after a period of growth, and this has led to pessimism among some analysts. The volatility and high levl of credit spreads have also affected the market. Differences in debt type and national bankruptcy regimes could also hamper the growth of the market.
