Clueless in Seattle
Article Abstract:
The governments which have met to discuss free trade at the World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle have failed to explain the case for free trade to protesters. They should point out that lack of free trade is an infringement on liberty, that free trade helps poor countries, and it can help the environment since it makes people better off, so better able to spend funds on environmental projects. The US has emphasized environmental and labor standards that should be discussed elsewhere, and which could damage the interests of poorer countries.

Spoiling world trade
Article Abstract:
Members of the World Trade Organization should take the opportunity at their Dec 1996 meeting in Singapore to eradicate aspects of their individual regional trade deals that discourage international trade. They should also strive to make the organization a powerful catalyst for liberal world trade.

The recent WTO summit focused on a number of troublesome issues. The most controversial were requests from the US and some European nations to study exploitive child labor and labor union rights. Telecommunications and lifting tariffs on technology products were two areas of success.
