The UK market for colas was worth almost 1 billion pounds sterling in 1995 and is the most important sector of the 2.8 billion pounds sterling soft drink market. Volume sales of all soft drinks reached 6.8 billion lt in 1995, with cola accounting for 1.8 billion lt, or 44%. The sector, previously dominated by Pepsi Cola and Coca-Cola, has seen the introduction of new brands and own-label products, all jostling for market share. Sales of cola are set to reach 2.14 billion lt by 2000, against 1.96 billion lt in 1997.

Sales of soft drinks totalled 6.8 billion lt in 1995, valued at some 2.8 billion pounds sterling. The sports and energy drinks sector totalled 97 million lt, worth 153 million pounds sterling. The sports drink market is dominated by SmithKline Beecham's Lucozade, with a 79% volume share. The sports/energy drinks market is relatively undeveloped in the U.K. and there is room for further growth. It is expected that sales of sports/energy drinks will reach 127 million lt by 2000.
