Colombia calls for arms from Uncle Sam
Article Abstract:
Colombian president, Andres Pastrana, is seeking aid from the US in tackling its guerrilla problem. There are over 20,000 guerrillas controlling some 40% of Colombia, including several areas that produce drugs. The two countries signed an agreement to share intelligence, in Jul 1999, and the Colmbian army has since had greater success in tackling the guerrillas. The US had aided Colombia in tackling drug trafficking, but the issue of guerrilla warfare is more complex. There are paramilitary groups which appear to have links with Colombia's armed forces, which also cause deaths in Colombia.

Fighting on
Article Abstract:
Colombia has inaugurated a new president, Andres Pastrana, but still faces guerilla wars against paramilitaries, while the government seeks to control the drugs trade and guerillas. The two guerilla groups are the ELN and FARC which had initially appeared to agree to spare civilians, but then backtracked on this agreement. Meanwhile, US aid is being increased to help the government combat drugs, though the US will not itself take part in the drug war on the ground.
