Standard ogre
Article Abstract:
Standard Oil was one of the first companies to be affected by antitrust regulation, and the company was broken up, with 34 companies formed, including Mobil and Exxon. American Tobacco, Alcoa and AT and T were also affected by antitrust moves in later decades, as was Microsoft during the 1990s. Political issues are important when courts seek to control monopoly power, and the application of the law leaves leeway for judgement on whether competition exists and the extent to which markets are affected. There are also problems in regulating national markets when markets are increasingly global.
