Article Abstract:
Any micro-processor driven equipment may not work due to the year 2000 date change problem. Industry observers point out some small companies are not taking action over the problem. It is estimated 76% of companies, with less than 10 workers, have not worked on the problem. Small companies should decide which areas of their operation are most at risk. They may need expert advice but in the long term they may save themselves extra expenditure. It has been predicted some 60% of machine failures will occur in 1999. The cost of solving the problem is forecasted to reach $858 billion.

The bomb in a computer near you
Article Abstract:
The year 2000 is likely to cause havoc with computer systems because they have been programmed to store years as two digits, with the result that the year 2000 may be interpreted by computers as being the year 1900. Bank computer systems might give 100 years of interest, bank vaults might open, and any organisation which uses a computer will be affected. These issues need to be urgently addressed because every line of every computer programme needs to be checked, and it is likely that about 40,000 companies in the UK will not be able to sort their problems out in time.

In case of trouble
Article Abstract:
It is very important for all business suppliers to reassure their customers they are year 2000 compliant. Suppliers will also need to ensure they will receive payment for goods in the year 2000. Suppliers may find it useful to send out information to their customers detailing their actions over the year 2000 issue. They should make plans to cope with other companies experiencing failure in their equipment. Some large firms may decide to dispense with suppliers who are unable to give them sufficient reassurance over the issue.
