Commercial and public refurbishment
Article Abstract:
The expected fall in the overall office population means that UK office design will continue to concentrate on refurbishment. Trends in office refurbishment will be governed by factors including company restructuring and changing workforce sizes, a more intensive use of space, and the ending of boundaries between leisure, work and retailing. This will mean that building design may focus on smaller, more individual buildings, and greater architectural focus on social amenities. There will also be greater emphasis on environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and sustainable refurbishment.

Office cultures
Article Abstract:
Two distinctive office buildings have been built in London, England, and Tokyo, Japan. The London Ark was designed by Ralph Erskine for Ake Larson. It is Swedish in concept but shows parallels with the National Library in Berlin. It is an inventive building although not always well-built and occasionally over-complicated. The Kajima Intelligent Building (KI) was built for the Kajima construction company and is the most Europeanised building in Tokyo. It is beautifully crafted. Both buildings were model projects but the Ark is spendidly inventive compared with KI.
