Competitiveness and the public sector
Article Abstract:
Economic Council of Canada Senior Research Dir Byrne Purchase is in charge of a major research project that has been commissioned by no less than the Canadian prime minister. The project, which shall delve into the link between public sector activity and the international competitiveness of Canadian business, shall focus on three basic goals. These are to reexamine the role of government institutions, to define the nature of the relationships that link government institutions with other social institutions such as the corporation or the family, and to educate the public of the importance of the research project in the resolution of many of the problems that cloud the public's image of the public sector. According to Byrne, the project shall use Michael Porter's widely accepted definition of 'competitiveness' as the basic theoretical foundation for its research process.

Innovation: Canada lags behind
Article Abstract:
Canada is known to have fallen behind other major industrialized nations in its application of technological innovations. This may prove troublesome in the long run since the correlation between economic growth and the adoption of technological advances is considered an established fact. It is imperative therefore that Canadians, be they students, workers or managers, make a conscious decision to change their attitudes toward the adoption of new advanced technologies to ensure that these innovations be allowed to foster long-term productivity improvements, particularly in the critical manufacturing sector.
