Computing's new lodestone
Article Abstract:
Researchers are seeking to develop magnetic memory chips to replace electronic chips. It is hoped that the new chips will be faster, non-volatile, more resistant to hazardous environments and consume less power. A Naval Research Laboratories team in Washington DC, headed by Gary Prinz,is examining magnetoresistance. An alternative magnetic tunnel-junctions approach is being used by researchers working for chip makers like Siemens and Motorola. Hybrid machines combining different technologies may offer a better alternative, though there are attractions to magnetic computing.
