Concrete mixer
Article Abstract:
Joaquin Lavin is a Chilean presidential candidate for parties on the political right, and he has benefited from Chile's economic problems, which are linked to a drop in copper prices. The Concertacion coaltion is still leading in polls, but Lavin is catching up. He proposes changes such as subsidies for child care and private health care, and job creation schemes. He is gearing his message to poorer voters, and is more sure of attracting votes from the rich. He may not achieve a clear victory in the first round of voting, but a second round of voting may be necessary.

After Menem
Article Abstract:
Eduardo Duhalde is the presidential candidate from the Peronists in Argentina, and his performance in La Matanza, Buenos Aires, raises questions about his performance in Argentina as a whole. President Carlos Menem initially sought to run for another term, though this was not permitted by the constitution. Duhalde has the task of showing how he is different from Menem, and freer trade has affected many Argentine companies. He also has to show that he is prepared to tackle corruption, which has been a problem in the decade to 1999.
