Many Irish, particularly in the northern and rural areas, are leaving their country in search of employment abroad. As a predominantly Catholic country, there is no divorce in Ireland. As of 1986, 56.8% of the population remain single, with the country's marriage rate being among the lowest in Europe. Death rates are on a decline and there is an observable increase in the younger population. With regards to Irish consumers' spending patterns, it may be noted that one-third of their total food and beverages expenditure goes to alcoholic beverages.

A number of factors influence the behavior of European consumers. Per capita incomes, for instance, vary across regions with Western Europeans earning the highest at over $21,000 in 1992. Marriage and birth rates have increased in the early 1990s. Political change has also increased migrations from the east to the west. Germany admitted about 1.2 million immigrants in 1991 while the Romanian population fell by 4% from 1991 to 1992 due to emigration.

Trends in consumer spending reveal a steady shift from basic goods toward discretionary items such as clothing and footwear.
